Christian Education at St. John Church

Adult Faith Formation

Our primary goal in religious education at St. John Church is to help our adults grow in depth and understanding of their Catholic Faith.  "Adult faith formation. . .must be 'the central task in this catechetical enterprise,' becoming the 'axis around which revolves the catechesis of childhood and adolescence as well as that of old age.'"  Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us, p.2

Meetings are held on Mondays (usually once a month) at 7:00 PM in the Gallagher Center.  We would be interested to hear from our parishioners considering any ideas you may have for our Adult Faith Formation Team.

Activities and Programs range from Bible Study to the purchase of reading materials from Church to Parenting programs.

First Communion Activities

Confirmation  -  Sunday, December  2008

R.C.I.A.

After many months of study and prayer by the Catechumens, three sacraments are solemnly celebrated on the Easter Vigil: Baptism, Confirmation,  and the Holy Eucharist.

Through Baptism the catechumens become Christians, being formed into People of God, adopted children of the Father, with their sins forgiven.  Through Confirmation they become more perfectly the image of the Lord, since they are signed with the gifts of the Spirit, actually filled with the Spirit that allows them to give witness to their faith.  Then they share in Christ's sacrifice by receiving the Eucharist at the table of the Lord, expressing the unity of the People of God.  Through these three Sacraments, the recipients achieve Christian maturity, enabling them to fulfill their mission in the Church and the world.

R.C.I.A. is looked upon as a spiritual journey for the adults.  Three major stages occur:

bulletThose involved learn of the Church, indicate an interest and a desire to become Catholic, and are eventually accepted as catechumens.
bulletDuring the cathechumenate their faith grows while they are more fully instructed and receive various rites connected with catechesis.  The completion of this state is the day of the Rite of Election when they are presented to the Bishop.
bulletThereupon, their spiritual preparation being satisfactory, these people are presented to the pastor and receive the three above mentioned sacraments.
